The roots of Edwards, Platt & Deely stretch back to the early days of the 1900’s. Opened as the second factory office for the Sloan Valve Company, its original founding is clouded by time. In 1935, Jerome A. Edwards and Phillip Platt, who ran the Sloan direct office started Edwards & Platt. Situated at 101 Park Avenue in New York City, surrounded by the leading M/E firms, the primary focus of the firm was to create and build the business by providing their principals with the strongest specification representative within the market. Their reputation grew as did their product offerings. Halsey Taylor, Church and Bradley soon joined the company and their business grew as did the fortunes of the city.
By 1960, a new generation was in place. Jerry Jr. and Jack Edwards took the reigns of the company; and, with the addition of Fiat, continued the specification strategy that had been successful. The mid-70’s recession brought turmoil to the construction industry. This factor, coupled with the need to provide continuity for the manufacturers, necessitated a merger of two firms. In January of 1977, Deely Associates and Edwards & Platt merged to form Edwards Platt & Deely. The combination brought a company with a strong wholesale contractor following, youth and energy. Steve Deely’s background in DWV and pump systems balanced the company and greatly increased its residential market penetration.
Robert Cruickshank joined the firm in 1985, having been the regional sales representative for Stockham Valve. This bold move was an initiative for growth and a complete restructuring of the company. By the beginning of the next decade, the former partners were retired, and Steve and Bob took control. The addition of Watts Regulator in 1988 afforded Edwards Platt & Deely the ability for the company to continue to expand. Bob O’Rourke, a former factory direct Watts salesman, joined the firm and brought a new dimension to the company, heating expertise.
In the meantime, new product lines were added as opportunities arose. State Water Heaters with Takagi Tankless and Zoeller Pump Company helped complement Edwards Platt & Deely’s breadth of lines. More recently Chicago Faucet, Guardian Safety Equipment, Just Sink, Willoughby, ECR Boilers, and Oasis Coolers came on board. The acquisition by Watts of Powers Regulator, Orion Acid Waste, Febco, and Blucher Drains has rounded out EPD’s offering.
As the millennium approached, the beginning of the fourth generation arrived when James Nesbitt joined the firm in 1998. Jim had management experience in the plumbing wholesale end. A great match for Edwards Platt & Deely.
Steve’s son, Matthew Deely, joined the business in 2003 after managing a resort facility in the Bahamas, and several years in advertising. Matt started calling on engineers in Manhattan and New Jersey before taking charge of distributors and contractors on both sides of the Hudson River.
After Matthew, veteran Bob Zeuner joined EPD to supplement the focus on engineers in Manhattan. Bob’s contacts in the industry were vital to keep the products represented in front of the ever changing face of commercial plumbing design.
The most recent piece to the puzzle was put in place when Michael Landi came on board in 2013. Michael is an engineering graduate of Worcester Poly Tech and fit naturally in the roll of introducing the vast array of innovative products from some of the most important manufacturers in the industry.
Today, Edwards Platt & Deely has over 30 employees with offices and warehouses in New York and Northern New Jersey. They are structured to build on their long history with a combination of experience and youth, primed for continued growth in the future.
